More facts about tape liner

Tape liner is usually made in yellow, black, and brown plastic. The most common type used is masking tape. It is also known as P-tape because it has a paperback, making the tape easy to remove when required.

There are various types of tapes available in the market based on their use, size, or thickness, i.e., vinyl, electrical, duct, etc.

Tape strips are not suitable for preventing damage to ropes due to rubbing against rocks when climbing up/down cliffs and mountains. Only cloth strip tapes can do this job. Electrical insulation and color-coding of wires can be done using electrical and colored tapes, respectively, and they provide better quality than just wrapping with a rope. The adhesive side of the tape is covered with peel-off paper or plastic to be peeled off from the surface on which it has been stuck.

In the market, various sizes and types of tapes are available. Tape thickness is determined by its adhesive strength, i.e., the more the adhesive strength, the greater the tape’s thickness, and vice versa. In some cases, gaffer tape or cloth strip tape is used. In contrast, in other cases, electrical insulation tapes are used for specific purposes, cable ties are also an option instead of often used rope. Still, they have low adhesion power, unlike the stickiness of a masking tape. If a cloth strip is not cut into the required length, it can be torn down manually.

Tape core colors determine the use, such as brown indicating grounded wires, black for ungrounded wires.

Tape is an easy-to-use and low-cost tool that can be used in various ways by just changing its functions. One must understand the different types of tapes available before using them efficiently.

It is easy to think of tape liner as being just another marker. I have known many artists who work exclusively in this medium, and they do so because the tape liner does something that other markers don’t do. It all comes down to chemistry.

Only the bottom surface of the tip makes contact with the paper. The top part of the tip remains inactive so that it won’t wear out prematurely. But even though only a portion of the tip is touching your paper, you apply enough pressure when writing or drawing so that paint flows all around inside where you can’t see it, creating a clean line that has no feathering except immediately at its barely visible edges.

Therefore, if you create an ink line that is more than 1.5 times the thickness of the tape liner tip, it will be too wide for the tape liner to do its magic. Therefore, I advise artists to use thinner lines with their tape liners than with most other markers. This suits my natural drawing style well because I tend to apply pressure lightly when I write with pens or paintbrushes, so naturally, my lines are thin anyway.

Imagine writing something on your paper and then lifting your hand before applying color to see how dark your line looks against the white paper underneath. If you need a very dark black line that stands out from its surroundings, then you will need to apply a shade or two darker paint than that dark line.
